A server is basically a beefed up computer. It acts as a central source for all your files, documents. It provides services to all of the computers on your network. For example, if you had a file server, we would configure it with redundant hard drives - so in the event that one failed, you won't lose any data. You should get a server if your network is starting to grow, and you need to share documents. If you also want to work from home, or want to host your own emails - it can do that too.
Having a server can help you;
The first step is understanding why you want a wireless network. Is it so you can walk in with your laptop and not have to plug in a network cable? We understand that it may be cheaper and 'easier' to get a wireless network, but if it's for a regular desktop computer - we recommend having ethernet cable installed in your office, so you don't have to worry about the wireless network dropping out. A cable network will always be more reliable, however, that's not to say that a wireless network won't be reliable. Second step (if we haven't scared you from running a wireless network) is determining how many users will be accessing the wireless network at the same time, or how many devices will be connected. 5 computers? 10 computers? Third step is determining your budget. Do you only want to spend $100 on a wireless access point, which may cause you future problems? We supply high quality Linksys wireless access points, as they have been proven to be more reliable with less dropouts. Fourth step is determining what level of security all of your computers can handle. We recommend using WPA-PSK, or if your computer's wireless card is new, then WPA2. These forms of security are far better than WEP, as WEP can be broken into in approximately 10 minutes. Fifth step is to give Andrew or Terry at B&M IT Solutions a friendly call, and let us know what you wish to do. We can provide all of the hardware and configure the software to get you connected to your new wireless network.
The most common reason people get a virus, or other harmful piece of malware on their computer, is because they either visit questionable websites, are using programs that allow you to access this software, or just don't scan their emails. If your email is hosted with B&M IT Solutions, we provide Antivirus scanning on the server level - so you don't even have to download the email message. We recommend installing ZoneAlarm (and having it initially configured by us) and also installing Avast! Antivirus. Avast! will provide realtime protection, so you will be alerted as soon as there is any sign of a harmful piece of software on your computer
We get this question alot. It really depends on what you need the computer for! If you are just browsing the internet, emails, etc, then you don't need a high-end computer which could cost you thousands. There are plenty of systems we can provide for under $800, some even include a 17" LCD monitor! To help you the best we can, you only need to provide us with a rough budget, and what you need the computer for. We will then recommend you the best system based on your budget, and we will generally back it up with a hardware replacement guarantee through our supplier.
If you are interested in contacting us in regards to your network setup, or need some friendly advice, please don't hesitate to give us a call ![]() |
